THE KENNEDY CENTER HONORS

Last week, my siblings and I traveled to Washington, DC for the KENNEDY CENTER HONORS where my mother was awarded one of the distinguished awards. Congrats to MOM!

Each year, the KENNEDY CENTER HONORS give national recognition to 5 individuals who through their lifetimes have made significant contributions to American culture through the performing arts. This year’s Honorees included my mother (beautifully, strong and talented performer, singer actress and above all great mom), Leon Fleisher (amazingly talent composer and pianist), Steve Martin (super funny comedian, actor, writer), Martin Scorsese (iconic academy award winning film-maker), Brian Wilson (kind hearted musician and songwriter best known for the Beach Boys).

I love Washington, DC so I was excited as we flew in over the Potomac River. I reminisced about my college days as I spotted Georgetown’s campus from high above.

The festivities started with a welcome brunch at the Kennedy Center. The invitation said business attire and we were by far the most shnazzy family in our designer duds surrounded by a sea of coats and ties (business in LA is very different than on the East coast). We sat at the front table with all the honorees and their families. I sat directly across from Steve Martin (I love him!) and pushed some nasty seafood stew around in my bowl (yuck!) The chairman of the Kennedy Center spoke and honoring began.

That evening, we dressed in black tie (I wore a pale pink floor length dress not a black tie) and headed to the State department for a Gala dinner hosted by Condoleezza Rice. Each of the honorees were toasted with a list of their achievements and highlights from their careers. It was a lovely affair (and it’s always fun to get all dolled up) and the food was better than at the brunch.

Back at the hotel that night, we hung out with the family and honored our mom in our own way (We laughed and snacked and watched movies). I am so fortunate to come from a supremely FABULOUS woman and have such a close-knit family!

The next day, I took off and strolled Georgetown (my old hood). I cruised the waterfront (Potomac river) and the boathouse where I spent almost every morning of my college career (I rowed varsity Crew all four years!) I checked out all the new high-end shops and boutiques (boy, have things changed in the many years since I lived here). I strolled across the campus and read my book on the lawn. It’s so weird to be back because its been years since I was a student here, but I don’t feel that much older and I don’t feel like it’s been that long (BUT it has been!)

That evening, we got all dolled up in black tie again and headed to the White House. There was some talk of boycotting because of conflicting political views with the president, but in the end it is not about politics. This is about the Arts and our Mom.

How odd to find myself in the Great Hall of The White House! I would never picture myself saddled up next to the President for a photo by a huge Christmas tree, but there we were. It was surreal, but cool and Bush was actually very personable and nice (I still may not think he is a FABULOUS president, but after meeting him I actually kinda felt bad for him.)

The president said a couple words about each of the honorees then we dined from a great buffet spread to the tunes of a choir. After dinner, we headed to the Kennedy Center for the actual taping of the TV honors.

Each of the honorees sat in the President’s box right in front of the stage (right next to the President) with their spouses seated behind them. My mom doesn’t have a significant other, so I was voted to fill the seat. We watched the touching and heartfelt tributes to Martin Scorsese, then Steve Martin, then Mom.

Smokey Robinson said a couple words from the Motown days then introduced the video montage off mom’s career highlights and achievements (Not a dry eye in the place. It was beautiful!) Jordan Sparks sang a Supreme’s medley, Vanessa Williams performed highlights from Mahogany and Lady Sings The Blues and Ciara rocked out to some of mom’s more recent 90’s hits. It as FABULOUS! You must tune in and watch when it airs on CBS December 26 at 9pm.

After the show, there was a grand dinner dance, but we stayed only a short time because everyone was exhausted and our flight was super early the next day. The KENNEDY CENTER HONORS were FABULOUS and the whole weekend a whirlwind of amazing experiences in our nation’s capital.

What a great honor for my mom to be recognized at such a high level for her talents and achievements. It was amazing to be able to be a part of this super FABULOUS weekend!

Great first hand information. It's always nice to hear real facts than the far-fetched accounts that so many spread around. Congrats to your mom and thanks for being a supportive family. It's wonderful to see a showbiz family (and of color) not dipping into the nonsense activities so many other famous people's sons and daughters get into. Keep making your mother proud. Believe it or not, what you do (and don't do) is the best expression of love you can give to your parents. P.S. Your father should have accompanied your mom. Let's find a her a great man.

Congrats to your Mom. What an honor. Your rocked that dress! Your entire family looked fabulous. Looking forward to the program later this month. Lots of coverage in the news and you were on camera a lot when they showed Steve Martin. Maybe you will be there for honors of your literary work! Good Luck!

In this age of dysfunctional celebrity families, it's heartwarming to see such a warm, close family. It speaks volumes for the way you kids were raised. Even without the well-deserved honor, your mother is a winner.

Thank you for the color commentary. I'm going to have the DVR set to burn on the day after Christmas!

Hi Chudney:
What an honor for your Mom. Diana is THE BEST! Thanks for sharing about your Mom and your family. I can't wait to see the honors on TV later this month.
Got my Diana fix on the IPOD in the car this AM driving on the 10 Fwy in LA. Today's choices: Remember Me, The Boss, It's My House, Take Me Higher, and The Best Years of My Life. BTW...Take Me Higher should have soared higher on the US charts--it is BS that it didn't go up like it did in Europe. I love the Take Me Higher video also on the Diana fan site. PS...Why isn't Dirty Looks in the I Tunes store with all the other hits?

An idea--any chance you can respond to blog entries that are of interest to you?

Love and hugs

Hello Chudney!
I enjoyed reading your blog about the "Kennedy Center Honors". I am so proud of your fabulous mom. What a great and well deserved honor. I also am in love with the Washington, DC area and Georgetown. Such a tony area and, yes, the Washington chic is very different from the chicness here in L.A.! Happy, warm and safe holidays to you Chudney! Hope Santa brings you lots of love =)

Here! Here! Diana Ross!

For all of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s and appeared as Diana Ross and the Supremes at every talent show whether at home or school or church...Congratulations to your mom. I remember how in those shows everyone wanted to be Diana Ross. (And we never called her Diana or Ms Ross, either, always, Diana Ross). And, then, we had to decide which song to sing...Baby love, Stop in the name of love, Ain't no mountain high enough, You can't hurry love, and then to finish off, Someday we'll be together. Or maybe one of the duets, one with Marvin Gaye. Oh, man!

Ok. Ok. I get carried away.

Continued best wishes.

Hi Chudney:

Again...your family rocks. Your Mom has meant the world to me. I can't explain it--it was 1979--and I got the All the Greatest Hits" album. I was transfixed by your Mom. The beauty, the grace, the fashion, the voice, the poses. What is it? I just can't explain it---it's just amazing.

Your Mom is like no other star today. Her love of performing is obvious. You feel like she is singing right to you.

You and your sibs are terrific. Keep the high ground. Stay focused, stay classy, and stay grounded.

I hope you can share the many loving posts that are here with your Mom. They are heartfelt.

Dear Chudney,

Thank you for your beautifully written account of The Kennedy Center Honors. I am so very proud of your mother. She certainly has raised some refined and classy children. Your siblings and you make me very proud, too. I am honored to be connected with such an awesome family.

I have been a fan since 1966 at the tender age of 14, when I first heard that angelic voice singing "I Hear A Symphony," coming from my brother's AM radio. Here I an at 55 years old with a wife, children and grandchildren of my own and I am still loving and admiring your mom for her beauty and that beauty goes deeper than the outward appearance. She has such a kind and loving heart. I am living proof to that!

When I lost my two beloved grandsons Mason Ross and Miles Evan in a tragic fire at their home on July 7th of 2006, your mom was right there with a personal e-mail to contact her. She sent the most breathtaking floral arrangement for their memorial... chock full of huge white roses. What really touched my soul was the personal call from her to speak with me on the phone a few hours after the funeral. She told me how beautiful the boys are and to be strong for my family. We ended the conversation by telling each other "I Love You." How appropriate not knowing that this would be the title of her new CD!

Mason and Miles carried your brothers' first names as their middle names. My daughter Nicole (the boys' mother) did that for me. They were tickled to know that they were named after Diana Ross' sons!

I hope that your mom received the holiday arrangement that I sent as a token of my family's condolences at the loss of her dad, your grandpa Fred Ross. Our hearts, prayers and god thoughts are with all of you. Please tell her that I said 'hi" and that I am always thinking of her every day.

I love your blogs. You have a great sense of humor.

From the Ketler home, wishing the Ross Family a very blessed and peaceful Christmas.

Happy Holidays!

The Ross Family are all wonderful! Everyone looks so pleased with their mom. It's great to watch (even it's always on television). I'm waiting for the announcement of the Ross Family Foundation for Children. I think it's time for you, and your siblings to launch an International Foundation that supports children's causes all over the world. Whenever I see Angelina Jolie, or Brad Pitt, or Bono, and others, I ask myself, "where are the Ross children?" Surely they have the money, the time, and the understanding regarding children's issues all over the world. Chutney, the other "Fabulous Life" does not involve the Red Carpet, however, it does involve dirt floors, and a life that is humble. The Ross Family Foundation would take you to a whole other level of consciousness. It's Time. Peace.

The Black Princess is ready and set to watch the show 2morrow. All know that not to call btw 8 & 10 PM. It goes a lil' somethin' like this:

U don't want shiznit
U don't need shiznit
U will not have an emergency that requires my attention
& don't even think of entering the room or calling me btw 8 & 10 PM

It is a running joke for all who know me and regarding my Diana fix...

Much deserved honor and I look forward to watching the style, grace & absolute gift Wednesday night.

Please tell your mother how her voice and music saved this man from death when he was 14 years old.
My brother, Michael, died in Vietnam on 26 May 1967. I was lost and spent that summer sitting on the top of the oustside of the porch sidewalk looking down the street hoping he'd be walking up towards me. All I did was imagine that he was in Hell for committing murder as I heard some say--behind me--at his funeral. But, whenever I put on one of your mother's albums, the grieving beast--within--subsided, and I was able to sleep.

Throughout the years, 40, since he died at 20, your mother's voice has becalmed me to the point where I would remember him with fond memories.

Your mother's voice and music saved the child in me. I am now, 55, and my brother's Mom is 87. She is ill with lung & circulatory problems, and I must do every thing I can to keep her out of a nursing home. I put on your Mother's music, and I get through the day. Sometimes, I am so overwhelmed by my Mom's needs, that, I wonder what my life shall be like with her gone? I hope that your Mother's music with soothe me, later, as it did, earlier? Yet, she was with me for Christmas, we listed to The Supremes' "Merry Christmas" album, and we were both calmed.

Love to your Mother, and I am glad that she got what she deserved. My Mom and I will be wathcing her on television tonight on CBS at 9 p.m.

Love to Diane!

Edward!

I just watched the Kennedy Center Honors on TV. During Diana Ross' tribute I cried. At the end, I sobbed. I sobbed for 10 minutes. It was uncontrolled. As mentioned in an above post, she has meant the world to me. She still does. God Bless her. The sun really is Diana.

Congrats on your book deal! I love your blog and I looked forward to your thoughts... wait... Will & Grace are bowling ... awe victory in slow motion... so funny!

You forgot to mention Yolanda Adams' rendition of Reach Out and Touch... it was beautiful... it was godly -- one of the highlights of the evening... Clearly you are your Mother's child b/c fans know that no song from "Lady Sings the Blues" was sung... but I get it. I am a writer, and my family reads my work and they look up from the page and say "alrighty."

Not a dry eye in my house tonight after watching the tribute to Miss Ross. OMG...that gospel choir singing backup on Reach Out and Touch was AWESOME. You and your sibs looked so happy. So happy for you guys. It really is a dream come true. Diana always wanted to be a star and she has simply outdone herself.

Now...is it true that Miss Ross is opening The Palazzo at the Venetian in Las Vegas? Please give us an update!

Hi Chudney. I thoroughly enjoyed the Kennedy Center Honors. I tuned in primarily to see your mom, the great Diana Ross! I enjoyed all of the musical tributes, but I was especially moved by Yolanda Adams who brought down the house.

Again,congrats to your mom!

I watch this show every year and it was cool watching it having read your commentary. Did you and your sibling play rock, paper, scissors to see who got to sit up there with your mom and the president?! LOL! Just Kidding. It was a really awesome tribute. How great was Vanessa Williams singing Touch Me in the Morning? Your Mom looked radiant :)

I was so thrilled watching as your mom, Ms. Diana Ross, receive the Kenned Center Honors Award. No one was more deserving. She has been and continues to be a role model and a woman of influence in so many of our lives. She truly is a remarkable woman whom I have admired all of my life.
