ETHIOPIAN FOOD

Very often I am asked, “What’s your ethnicity” or “What’s your mix.” I think my beauty (a girl’s gotta have good self esteem), my unique, strong features confuse and interest people. Most often because of my name people think I am Indian, but I get asked at least once a week if I am ETHIOPIAN.

My mom is black and my dad is white and Jewish. My big eyes and high forehead come from my mom and my nose from my dad. The mix gave me caramel colored skin. I am happy with my unique look (though nasty blogs and the people who read and comment on them would rather I never leave the house since they obviously feel my features are offensive. GRRR… I hate those nasty bloggers).

An older ETHIOPIAN man in DC once told me the story of the Jews who fled Israel for Egypt after the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. Many settled in ETHIOPIA and mixed with the locals… My mom and dad just did the mix later!

It’s funny that people (even ETHIOPIAN’S themselves) think that I could be ETHIOPIAN. I always respond, “no, I’m not BUT I love the food.” Here in LA there is a little gem of a neighborhood called LITTLE ETHIOPIA, 2 blocks filled with the yummiest restaurants. I have eaten at almost every single one and even a couple in other areas.

My favorite spot by far on Fairfax is MERKATO. It’s a little grocery store with a small restaurant attached and its always filled with locals. It’s inexpensive and the portions are big. Also on the street and very yummy are Rosalinds and Nyala. Both are FABULOUS and super delicious, but they tend to be a bit more touristy; the prices are a bit higher and the portions a bit smaller.

My friend Carolyn and I head to Fairfax often (in October we were feeling wild and went once a week). We always order the same thing and it’s always FABULOUS! We start off with the Vegetarian combo, which comes with red lentils (my favorite!) cabbage, greens, split peas and salad on a large circle of ingera bread.

You eat ETHIOPIAN food with your hands (Not one utensil at the table) and you use the ingera bread to scoop up the food. It’s fun and so delicious! We always add Yodoro Tibs (chicken in red pepper sauce) or some other meat (they use a lot of lamb and beef too, but we tend to stick to the chicken). Also Carolyn’s favorite is the Tim Tim Fit Fit (a vinegary, cool injera bread mixed with salad) so we always get a side of that too.

ETHIOPIAN food is healthy, delicious and FABULOUS. If you haven’t tried it you must go out and find your local ETHIOPIAN spot!

Hi Chudney
Loved seeing you at your Mom's concert at Universal last week. Nice pink top. Sorry to hear about the passing of your granfather in Detroit. Were you close?

Chudney--I saw Diana with Michael Eisner. I totally relate when your Mom says she looks into the eyes of the audience. I connected with your Mom on stage via eye contact. She truly is gifted and so uplifting. Many, many successes to you and your family. See you at Mr. Chows

Hi Chudney: Interesting blog. Some people can't help but write or say mean things about others, mean natured and jealous is whar the are. Your features are similar to the model Iman. She is beautiful also. Such an exotic look. You have a handsome dad and a beautiful mother. You are truly blessed in the genes department! Looking forward to the next blog. Always fun!

Hi Chudney,

I'm sorry that people are so mean spirited. There's a lot of people out there who aren't happy with themselves, so it makes them feel better to criticize others. You're a lovely young lady and I know your mom and siblings are so proud of you. Keep up the good work and keep doing your thing. Let the haters do what they do while you continue to do what YOU do!

Oh btw, I love Ethiopian food too. It's really good!

I like your blog. Ignore all the negative people. And you should also ignore the fans of your mum, because this is your own site. People should accept you as 'Miss Chudney Ross' and not as the daughter of your mum. By this way, who is your mum and what does she do?????

Hey Chudney I've been checking out your blog for a while now. You've got good stuff to say so keep blogging.I'm a huge fan of your mom and I can certainly say she did a great job with all of you guys. About the Ethiopian food I agree, I go to this spot called Abysinnia here in Philly, the food is AMAZING!My boyfriend always makes crazy faces with the injera bread.lol

Hello Chudney,

I thought I stop by and read your blog. Just wanted to say that it was wonderful of your brothers and sisters to supported your mom at LA Gibson Theatre concert. Also, tonight at the Kennedy Awards. It shows how much your family is so blessed. Don't bother with those nasty bloggers. I think your simply beautiful. You come from great genes from both sides. I would love to see more pictures of you with your dad.

Stay well...

Hey Chudney can I tell you how many times I have defended you and your family on blackvoices.com?? haha they are so rude on that board. its funny that one episode of girlfriends where ur sister mentions that site. People think I'm every nationality. Why are people obsessed with knowing where your ancient ancestors were created? Anyways, just wanted to spread some love.

Chudney, I have to second the annoyance of the folk who come to your site only to talk about your mother. You are not your mother's messenger! Furthermore, you are, as are all mixed children, your own unique person, and it's not your problem if people on either side of the race divide have a problem with you. (You should probably not allow anonymous posts, either.)

I'll say this, though, I wish I could eat like you do and still be skinny, and I say this in the nicest possible way! You must have a metabolism on overdrive, wish I did. Look into moonlighting as a food editor or writer somewhere! You certainly know your way around restaurants!

Once again, I enjoy reading your thoughts.

I'm another person to agree, that you should not approve the comments of your mother's fans. Your mother is a great entertainer, there is no doubt. Her fans should write their adortion on "Diana Ross Boards" in the internet (I know there many outthere) and not on your blog site!!!

The Man of your Dreams

ps: I love you because I know that you are a special person and not because you are Diana Ross's daughter!

You definately have to try Pakistani food. It is sooooo good. In Pakistan, they eat with their hands also. Pakistani food has a mix of flavors and spices that is beyond description. Give it a try. :)

That is funny. My cousin once told me that she was attending UT in Austin that guys from Pakistan kept approaching her because they thought she was Pakistani. When they heard her southern accent they of course were surprised.

I live in Israel and once I went to visit a friend before she went back to America. She is an Ethiopian Israeli, and when I sat down her aunt started speaking to me in Amharic. When I was in Ethiopia, 2001, I knew some Amharic, but not much anymore. It was so funny that when she kept speaking to me I couldn't figure what she was talking about. So I kept telling her in Hebrew that I didn't understand what she was saying. Finally, she understood that I wasn't Ethiopian and we had a good laugh.

Yeah, Ethiopian food is great. My friend recently showed me how to make it.

Although I have very nappy hair & obviously Negro features, I get asked where I'm from quite a bit.

IMO - Looking like an Ethiopian woman is a high compliment. Ethiopia has some of the most beautiful people in the world.

I found a link to your blog via Mes Deux Cents & I must say that I am digging the vibe here!

Hi Chudney, I instantly connected with your blog because I also have big beautiful and sexy eyes. I grew up hearing many hurtful comments about them but my wonderful mom would say. “You just tell them that they are jealous and that your eyes are beautiful”. I still get those insecure idiots occasionally and throw back in their faces what they are dishing to me…I find that they can dish it out but can’t take. We have an exotic look that’s different and some men find them irresistible.

I get the Ethiopian questions all the time too and consider it a compliment because they are beautiful people. The men usually ask and most times the women just stare. Tease them and say, “Yes I am Habesha” (a word often used to describe all Ethiopians). They will usually respond by saying, “Oh Habesha” and proceed to speak in their language. After having a little fun I fess up.

I like your blogs, they are funny and entertaining and I like your style of writing, it gives one the feel of being there. Keep doing your thing girl!
